Ethnographic and historical complex Chuvash Kerem
Add to the journey
An amazing place on the Chuvash land, occupying a picturesque territory of 19 hectares on the outskirts of the village of Maly Sundyr. About 4 centuries ago, the Yamskaya post station of the Siberian Route with an inn and a tavern was located here. Visit the Chuvash Kerem ethnocomplex to plunge into the architectural atmosphere of old Chuvashia.
Every year thousands of visitors from different parts of Russia visit the Chuvash Kerem ethnocomplex to touch the life of the ancient Chuvash and learn more about the culture and traditions of the people.
The main and most voluminous element of the ethnographic complex Chuvash Kerem is the ancient settlement Chemen Kardi, which serves as an architectural museum in the open air. In ancient times, Hillfort standed for defensive structures to defend from the raids of the Mongol-Tatars. During the danger, all the locals (and sometimes residents of several neighboring settlements) took refuge in the settlement. The ancient settlements of Chuvashia belong mostly to the architecture of the early Iron Age. The ancient settlement Chemen Kardi was restored according to ancient descriptions, taking into account the technologies of Ancient Russia. Here you can plunge into the atmosphere of the ancient settlements of the Chuvash people – Suvaro-Bulgars.
Ethnographic Museum of Culture of the Suvar-Bulgar-Chuvash
You can look at the details of Chuvash life in the museum, which is located in the complex. Utensils and household items collected from villages are scrupulously collected here.
Suvars, Bulgars, Volga Bulgars – so in ancient times they called the Chuvash, and only since the middle of the 16th century the name Chuvash has become more used.
Museum of the Siberian Route and the Stan Yal Postal Station
One important component of the ethnographic complex Chuvash Kerem is the Postal Museum. In Russia, government orders were transmitted through special people – messengers. Therefore, there were small stations all over the country where messengers could rest and change tired horses.
Yamskaya postal station Stan Yal was established by the decree of Empress Catherine II which was published in 1765. This decree prescribed the organization of postal stations throughout Russia.
The Postal Museum presents an exposition about the Stan Yal postal station of the Simbirsk Postal Route.
